West Coast Trail Photos Posted on Flickr

The photos from my West Coast Trail Trip are now up at Flickr. I'm still working on adding comments to them. I'll post a day by day point form log of the trip in the next couple of days.

Nice pics. I'm really interested in how the gear you brought held up and what you would do differently. I'm gearing up for the trip in July. I've downloaded your gear list and am slowly compiling mine.

Hi jayrengo,

All of the gear held up fine. The only things I had problems with were:

* Keeping warm in the hammock - I was fine with the underpad and undercover for the first 3 nights but on the third I was really cold. This was probably due to colder temperatures, a damp base layer and a badly hung hammock but it made for an uncomfortable night. If I had time and money I would probably go for a Jacks R Better quilt of some sort to go under the hammock instead of the undercover and under pad.

* Shoes and gaiters - These were fine for while it wasn't raining but on the last day my feet were wet the whole day and this led to blisters. These also made the last two days kind of tiring as I had to pick my way through or around every mud hole to keep my feet as dry as possible. This was kind of fun for four days but by day five my energy levels were way down and it made the day feel like it dragged on forever.

* Base layer - I would definitely take a third base layer just to use at night in case the other two were damp or wet. I made the mistake on day three of washing one of my layers and then the fog rolled in so it never dried out. This made the last night kind of chilly.

* Food - Definitely bring a variety of fresh and freeze dried food and do some research on high calorie/low weight options. I didn't and ended up with 10 lbs of food somehow which ballooned my pack up to 30 lbs. The high light of my day was having the salami and cheese that I brought for lunch. Don't underestimate how quickly you will get bored of some foods. I had about a cup of trail mix for each day and only enjoyed it because I added some dried apple slices and M&Ms to it. On the other hand, beef jerky got boring really fast.
